Season's Greetings!

Hello everyone.

I made a video Holiday Card using some features in Windows 10.  Getting the hang of this now!

Best wishes to all for happy, healthy, and safe holidays! Enjoy time with friends and family...and maybe get a little model railroading in too!

P.C.C.M. 67: Part G

Hello,

In this 67th virtual ops series John, Neal, and I posted in quick succession to feature the movement of a coal train originating as a string of empties from Neal's Atlantic Pacific R.R. ,stopping at West Mill on my layout to pick up more empties, and then proceeding to John's New York Central Train Layout where the hoppers were loaded at his Hudson Coal facility.  The loaded train was then dispatched back to my layout and then eventually to Neal's.

I wanted to keep the momentum going so I didn't post about all of the related secondary moves from West Mill after the loaded coal train stopped by to drop off cars there.   As an epilogue to P.C.C.M. 67 the Kings Port Division is now presenting the final delivery of cars involved in this large coal op.

Two cuts of loaded hoppers at West Mill Yard are ready to be forwarded to their consignees. These cars came off the coal drag dispatched from John's Terminal Yard.

The first is set-out on the car float for Port Owen Power and Light.

The second cut in the background behind the car float is for KP Steel and will be delivered by a Penn Central local.

Before that happens West Mill will work with a KP&W coal transfer from Mayfield that includes cars routed from their LV coal connection.  These now loaded cars will be forwarded to the Genesee coal docks in Rochester by the KP&W.

The KP&W's hard working RS3 #566 leads the hoppers into West Mill.

West Mill Yard's usually hard working SW9 # 8951 can take it easy this time.  The KP&W is going to take care of the set-out.

KP&W's Coal Extra #566 leads the cars beyond the yard entrance and then backs them onto an easy ready track for future pick up.

The conductor gives the WM Towerman a friendly wave.

Passing the closed West Mill Station while backing into the siding.

The loaded hoppers are set out and ready for pick up by the next KP&W train heading westward.  The switcher's crew enjoys just watching the action.

RS3 #566 separates from the train and grabs its caboose.

The Alco and cabin car rest while waiting for their opportunity to pull some boxcars for the return trip to Mayfield.

The loaded hoppers for the Genesee docks are waiting for pick up

A red indication on the north end of town alerts railfans of the approach of the anticipated KP&W Westbound

Railfans get a nice surprise as some temporarily purloined B&M units sequestered by the KP&W at Williams Yard lead a coal train!

This is the KP&W's WS-1 from Williams Yard to Salamanca, NY powered by an F7A/ GP9/F7B

The pooled power is uncoupled at West Mill to pick up the hoppers from Mayfield.

Rolling past the hoppers to get in front of them for pick-up.

A lucky railfan next to the West Mill sign takes photos as the mixed consist rolls by

I wish I'd thought to have taken railroading pictures during the Penn Central era!!!!

The cut of hoppers from Mayfield is picked up...

...and backed into the waiting train

Watch the B&M/KP&W units add the string of hoppers from Mayfield to WS-1 in the video below:

The train is coupled up and gets permission to proceed westward.

Watch the train leave West Mill in the video below:

Later that day two trains are set up for departure.  KP&W #566 will be taking its string of boxcars back to Mayfield....

We won't focus on that train since we're most concerned with the movement of coal traffic in this series!   Take my word for it that the KP&W DOES forward these cars to Mayfield!  :)

The second train which we WILL follow is a string of loaded coal hoppers for KP Steel, powered by Penn Central RSD12s often assigned to trains to Kings Port. The train is designated Extra 6865.

Extra 6865 heading for KP Steel's holding yard is underway!

Passing rural scenes near Marion...

Reaching the summit of the Kings Port Division...

..and finally arriving at KP Steel.

The caboose is cut so the cars can be set out.

Watch the last coal cars of the series get set out at KP Steel in the video below:

That concludes the coal operation in P.C.C.M. 67!  Thanks for following along on this end of the year special between the A.P.R.R., the K.P.D., and the N.Y.C.T.L.!

P.C.C.M. #67: Part E

Hello all!

We're doing a quick continuation of our P.C.C.M. #67 coal ops as the cars forwarded to Hudson Coal on the New York Central Train Layout have been loaded and are now being sent back to consignees like RMO Electric on Neals' APRR, and KP Steel and Port Owen Power and Light on my Kings Port Division.

Mixed EMD/ GE power in the form of a GP30 sandwiched between two six axle U Boats is seen gliding down the high line over Kings Port pulling a long string of loaded hoppers.   The dynamic brake whine from the set of GP38-2 helpers helping to control the descent at the rear of the train can be heard as the train passes.  This is PC Coal Extra #6552.

Watch this action in the video below:

The helper set rolls past the platforms at Kings Port Station

The long coal extra will cross Ulster Ave. in Lower Kings Port soon, but first a short local powered by a GP7/ F7B consist comes to a stop there so Extra  #6552 can overtake him.

Watch the local stop and block Ulster Ave for safety in anticipation of  Extra #6552 passing by at speed.

Watch Extra 6552 roar through Kings Port in the video below

After Extra 6552 is gone the southbound local notches up to run to West Mill Yard behind the long coal extra.

Watch the GP7/F7B pull its train out of town in the video below.

Extra #6552 arrives at West Mill about an hour later.

The three locomotives and their loaded coal hoppers await the attention of the busiest SW9 in the Penn Central system!

The yard switcher prepares to pull two cuts of cars from this train.  One is for the car float to send to Port Owen's power plant and one is for KP Steel's furnaces.

The switcher heads over to access the end of the Extra 6552.

Before the switcher arrives the helper set cuts itself off the rear of the train and moves to the West Mill engine track.

The helper set out of the way, the yard switcher pulls the first cut of cars.  These are for KP Steel.

The cut is pushed into the yard.

The switcher then goes after a second cut; this one for the car float.

West Mill Yard is filling up with loaded coal hoppers.

After setting out the two cuts of cars the switchers crew tells Extra 6552,  "Here's your caboose back!"...

....and returns to the yard.

While the switcher takes a break, PC Extra #6552 leaves West Mill for Weehawken where the loaded hoppers will be turned over to the A.P.R.R. for their run to Rock Ridge.  From there they will be delivered to RMO Electric.

Next stop: Weehawken!

Hey!  Look who just showed up!   The local, powered by GP7 #5688 and the F7B unit, that waited for the hotshot coal train in Kings Port is now at West Mill.

These cars will be picked up by the KP&W on a transfer run to Mayfield later.

The switcher crew's break will soon be over as they get called to pull the caboose off this short train.

That's plenty of train action to report for now.  I'll post an Epilogue after the hoppers for Rock Ridge reach their destination.  The main thing to remember is that a train of loaded hoppers for RMO Electric is heading to Weehawken where Neal's APPR will take over.  See how the APRR handles the loads on Neal's blog .    Also check John's blog to see how he quickly turned around all of the empties he received the other day for loads to keep this op going!
