P.C.C.M. #36: The Kings Port Turn, Part 1

Greetings!

This current Penn Central Car Movement series has focused on the Kings Port & Western. Today the action shifts over to the Penn Central at West Mill Yard, specifically featuring the the Kings Port Turn serving various industries between West Mill and Kings Port .

Power for today's out and back run to Kings Port is GP30 #6115 and GP7 # 5689 both still in their pre-merger paint, although the GP30 has fared considerably better over the years.

The cars making up the Turn were sorted the other day and left on track #2.

The NYC Hi Cube and the IC boxcar are both loaded with beer for Reynolds Beverage Distributors.  The Hi Cube was selected for loading tall neck bottles!

Brown NYC 50 footer #80755 and PC 40 foot boxcar #104478 are both loaded with drums of ink for Canton Box from Drywell Inks.

And finally, PC #77047 is loaded with burlap bags from Moore & Co. for Hedberg Aggregates.

The all NYC consist leaves the engine service track and moves into the yard to pick up its cars.

Stopping at Sal's Salvage to switch tracks for the backup move...

Backing into the yard...

Once coupled on and ready to go, the GP30 and GP7 pull the cut out of the yard.

Yardmaster Cappy Foster does a roll-by inspection and notices that one of his employees in the background by the caboose appears to be just staring off into space.  Cappy will be talking to him later...

Backing up for the caboose...

The Turn gets underway but only needs to travel a few hundred yards for its first set out, Canton Box Co.  The caboose and PC #77047 are separated from the train while the two cars for Canton Box are backed into its short spur track.

A rookie crew mistake!  There is not enough room for both of these cars at Canton Box!  PC#104478  is left behind while NYC #80755 is returned to the train.

It will later be constructively placed on the middle track shown below when the Turn comes back from Kings Port.  The crew double checks the rest of its orders to avoid any future mistakes on this run.  The Turn leaves West Mill...

...and later arrives at Reynolds Beverage Distributors.

The Hi Cube and IC cars will be set out here, but first there is an empty TP&W car at Booms Ready Mix, further down the shared siding with Reynolds that needs to be pulled.

The TP&W car is coupled onto the train and the two cars for Reynolds are set out.  The crewman protecting the grade crossing is getting tired of holding up his arm!

Once that work is completed the Turn continues on its way.

Next up:  The Kings Port Turn Part 2.

  2. Nice work Ralph! Good choice of motive power. Gotta love the predecessor NYC and PRR units working around West Mill. Cappy Foster working in mysterious ways? Gotta let the new guys learn that a siding with capacity of one car length cannot hold two cars. They won't make that mistake again!
Nice tour with the Kings Port Turn!!

  4. Great post Ralph! It's not often the railroad freely admits the erroneous planning of spotting cars at an industry. Rookie mistakes do happen! Usually those people are put on non-paying furlough until a thorough investigation has been completed. Maybe they can make the issue go away with a bottle of the finest that Cavendish as to offer?
