The KP&W delivers cars to KP Steel: Part 1

Now that the loaded hoppers from Hudson Coal that arrived as unit coal train UKP-1 have been set out at West Mill, the Kings Port & Western will take over responsibility for delivering them to KP Steel.

Before that takes place, it worth noting that the trio of GE U Boats that headed UKP-1 now returns to Selkirk running light.

Meanwhile, over in King Port, the KP&W's "Steel Job", powered by three switchers is about to finish its work by returning to Williams Yard with a number of cars loaded with coils from KP Steel.

After pulling a number of cars the Steel Job has left KP Steel's holding yard empty and ready to receive some hoppers.

Just as the Steel Job passes by Ulster Ave. a pair of KP&W SD9s in the experimental black and orange scheme leave Williams Yard with a caboose to pick up some of the loaded hoppers at West Mill.  SD9s 890 and  879 are the only KP&W units painted in this scheme that was eventually discarded by the railroad's management.

The KP&W duo later reaches West Mill where it starts work by dropping off its caboose in a run around move.

The SD9s will pick up several, but not all, of the cars from UKP-1 to deliver to KP Steel.  The steel mill's unloading facilities can't handle all of them at once.   The rest will be transferred tomorrow.

After pulling the string of hoppers the train backs up to grab the caboose for the return trip to Kings Port.

...and heads out.

Getting the green indication to take the main and proceed out of West Mill.

Later seen approaching Kings Port...

The caboose is cut and the train pulls ahead of the lead into KP Steel's Holding yard.

Backing the hoppers into the holding yard.

The set out completed, the KP&W crew stops at KP Tower to confer with the Tower Master...

...backs up to pick up the caboose...

...and returns to Williams Yard.

That's half the job done!

Next Up:  the remaining hoppers are transferred from West Mill to KP Steel.

  2. If the virtual ops last a thousand yeas modelers will look back at this blog entry and say "This was their finest hour!" An incredible entry that covered so many aspects of the P.C.C.M.S that this will be hard to replicate. A trio of U Boats in a lite engine move. KP&W SD9s in the black & orange paint scheme hauling the loaded coal hoppers were a perfect choice of power! A trio of KP&W switchers with steel products was another perfect match of power to tonnage! The Empire Belt coal hoppers photo bombing select shots! Patti and I both loved seeing them a thousand miles away!
The use of figures, scenic elements and the great photography make this entry my favorite of the year!

    1. Wow John! Thank you so much! The efforts we've both made over the last several P.C.C.M.s inspired me. You've noted how the "virtual ops catalyst" has motivated layout and operations improvements in our work. This post is the happy result. Thanks for the compliments on all of the elements included in this latest installment. It was my pleasure to included the surprise photo bomb by the great looking E.B.R.R. hoppers!
