UKP-1 is broken up at West Mill

Hello again!

Continuing to follow unit coal train UKP-1, dispatched from Terminal Yard to West Mill with loaded hoppers from Hudson Coal for K.P. Steel, we left the three large six axle U Boats at the head end in the capable hands of the West Mill Yard hostlers, seen boarding the consist below.

The three GE units are uncoupled from the train and moved to the empty engine servicing track.

The consist will return to Selkirk "running light" after servicing.

SD9 #6922 gets the call to set out the loaded hoppers in the yard.

The first job is to pull the caboose and set it out at the caboose track

Then comes the slow work of pulling short strings of cars at a time.

...setting them out on Yard Track #2...

...and Yard Track #1.

After all the cars are set out in the yard tracks, SD9 #6922 breaks away. Two yard tracks of loaded hoppers are ready to head out to KP Steel.

Next up:  The loaded hoppers will be moved to KP Steel by the Kings Port & Western

Acknowledge set out of UKP-1 hopper cars at West Mill and release of Engines 6533, 6538, 6554.
    Terminal Yard out...

Another excellent installment following train UKP-1 as it is received at West Mill and the cars spotted for their next movements. Thoroughly enjoyable to watch the smooth work at West Mill with the big SD9 getting the call to duty!
    Looking forward to next installment!

    1. Thanks John! After seeing several prototype photos of PC SD9s doing yard duty I pressed 6922 into service at West Mill and have been happy with its work!

  2. A possible prototype for this kind of operation could be the B&M Mt Tom unit train, that I believe had a fair amount of switching at the Mt Tom power plant. Might be worth some research.

    1. Thanks John! I appreciate the reference to possible proto action like this. My layout wasn't originally built for operations so anything like that I can squeeze out of it is a bonus. I'll see if I can find any more info.
