P.C.C.M. 41 I: Local yard run from West Mill

Howdy train fans!

Now that all the cars from Terminal Yard have been set out at West Mill, Cappy Foster & Co. get to work emptying their quickly filling yard.

The easiest move is to deliver the three cars that just came in on VW-1 (see previous blog entry).   No one is talking, but its also commonly known that Sal Monella of Sal's Salvage has a certain "pull" and is impatient to have his Caterpillar excavator delivered ASAP.  Palms were greased, promises made..."I don't know if I saw you here or what".

In any case, the NYC switcher is fired up again to take care of this bit of business.

The switcher couples onto the three cars left by VW-1...

...and the old Pacemaker that is empty for GERN Industries, located right next to Sal's Salvage.

A little shuffle is required to place the two cars for Sal's Salvage together..the depressed well flat with the CAT and the drop mill gon loaded with scrap wheels.  The two 38 foot hoppers in the background are loaded with ore for KP Steel.   The NYC covered hopper is cut from the depressed well flat...

..and placed on the next track so the two cars for Sal's can be coupled together.

Once this is done the switcher pulls the cars for Sal's and GERN and then backs up to grab the covered hopper for nearby Empire Grain, seen sprawling in the background.

The short string of cars is pulled out of the yard for a back up move near WM Tower

..and pushed out of the way so the switcher can do a run around move to get behind them.

The small loco, now pushing from the rear of the cut of cars, sets up a move for dropping cars off at GERN and Sal's.  The Pacemaker needs to go in first on this shared spur track.

With only the covered hopper and Pacemaker in tow, the switcher sets out the venerable grey and red boxcar at GERN.

Moving back and forth to claim the two cars for Sal's...

...and setting then them out at the Salvage Yard.  After yelling out "Itz aboud time ya palookas!",  Sal is finally happy to inspect his excavator...and is also trying to connive a way of keeping the loaner excavator CAT sent him earlier along with his own newly repaired unit.

The switcher crew, relieved to see the back of Sal, quickly pulls forward to serve Empire Grain...

Leaving the main to access Empire Grain

..and backing into a trio of grain cars to be pulled from the large complex.

The crew is cleared to temporarily place the pick-ups on the main as no traffic is expected...

...and NYC covered hopper #892010 is set out at Empire Grain.

The last set-out completed, the engine crew returns to the three pick-ups and brings them into West Mill Yard.

First job is done!  Lots more work by the Penn Central and Kings Port & Western to come!

    Terminal Yard out...

Nice work on getting these four cars to their destinations and picking up the Cargill covered hopper for it's next move. The old Pacemaker car looks great and fits right into the action. Funny to see Sal being Sal. Fuhgeddaboutit! Great job all around!

    Rock Ridge Yard Out!

Nice set of moves going on. Sal must be a well-liked person around the place, especially this time of the year. Great work on the grain moves. It's one of my favorite moves to watch.
