Four New Industries for the Shelf Layut and Virtual Ops!

Hi there!

As a follow up to my last post about the shelf layout addition to the Kings Port Division Model Railroad I've been working on creating additional industries that can be switched on them, increasing freight car traffic in the virtual operations between my layout and those of friends who have been involved in this fun venture.

Without further ado, here is Woodstock Hill All Natural Soda!

The Liebowitz's who founded Woodstock Hills Natural Soda in 1968 as a past time in their yurt while living in a Catskill Mountain commune found their bottled sodas took off way beyond their expectations!   Now living in the swanky Wexford neighborhood in the hills over looking Kings Port, the couple have recently opened their new bottling facility in Bloomberg.   The business is served by the Kings Port & Western's Mountain Branch.

The new factory is quite s step up from trucking orders from their garage to the Kings Port Team Track!  It is expected that Woodstock Hills will receive packaging materials, labels, and perishables (fruits and vegetables) from the N.Y.C.T.L.,  and possibly pallets from Neal's lumber via the A.P.R.R., and will ship to Ralph's Grocery Warehouse and  Terminal Warehouse and Cold Storage.

Another business in the same industrial park is Catskill Mountain Press,  publishers of a small regional weekly newspaper and periodically updated vacation pamphlets and brochures promoting Catskill area vacationing.   Great information for folks in Empire City planning a getaway from the hectic city life!  Catskill Mountain Press will receive paper from Moore & Co. and ink from Drywell Inks on the New York Central Train Layout.   Ships all over.

An aerial view of the industrial area including Van Winkle Canning

On the other side of the shelf layout two new industries have joined Quality Fabrications.  Zenith TV is busy fashioning fine cabinet televisions that in the '60s and '70s were furniture in your living room.  "Zenith, the Quality goes in before the Name goes on!".  Zenith receives cabinets from University Millwork, electrical components from Bruce Electric Equipment, hardware from American Hardware, labels and packaging....ships to Superior Furniture, Terminal Warehouse and Cold Storage, and All City Storage  (hopefully Three Amigos warehouse on the Atlantic Pacific R.R. as well)

The fourth addition to the Bloomberg economy is REVCO, manufacturer of assorted plastic gizmos, novelty items and plastic kitchen ware (Tupperware, turnip twaddlers, and other amazing devices for the modern kitchen) will receive packaging and labels from the N.Y.C.T.L.  and ship to All City Storage, Terminal Warehouse and Cold Storage, and Ralph's Grocery Warehouse (plastic strainers, wonder egg poachers, food storage containers that makes lettuce last for a year...that sort of thing).

Here is an overall view of this industrial area.

More industries shipping by rail is good for the Kings Port & Western and, by interchange at West Mill, the Penn Central!!!

Stay tuned for the next Penn Central Car Movement series (P.C.C.M. #47) which will feature these businesses and others on the Mountain Branch of the Kings Port & Western R.R.

  1. Nice work getting the town of Bloomberg and the KP&W Mountain Branch really into the mix of the virtual ops! The creativity, choice of businesses and the visual interest created by the new industries really makes the shelf layout come alive. Add in increased employment and rail shipments and this is a sure fire winner. A great project that was well executed from concept to completion!

  3. Great additions to the K.P.D.! I do see lots or revenue to be generated. Add Revco to the A.P.R.R. to send those plastic containers to the C&P Restaurant Supply as well as other things to the Three Amigos Warehouse! Actually, you gave me a couple great ideas on how to add more industries to the A.P.R.R. I'll need to reach out to the Senior Management of the railroad.

  4. Great looking industries for Bloomberg and the growing Mountain Branch. You can add Lefty Martin Appliances as a customer of those fine Zenith console TV sets. Centennial Beverage Distributors would be happy to pick up Woodstock Hills as a new brand. Lots of thirsty Flower Children in the hills around Boulder. The KP&W continues to be a industry leader in growing its customer base and on line industries.
