P.C.C.M. 47B: More cars for West Mill.

Greetings Kings Port Division railfans!

A number of cars are due to arrive at West Mill on Kings Port & Western train BW-4, a Turn that is coming back to West Mill from Bloomberg after picking up cars at new industries on the layout.

Before the train arrives West Mill Yard sends out a short run to pick up cars from nearby GERN and Sal's Salvage.   These include a GERN covered hopper loaded with GERN Flux that is being shipped to the GERN facility in Arvada, Colorado, and a Burlington gondola loaded with scrap aluminum for Ball Container in Golden, Co.

The cars are pulled into West Mill Yard

Another car that was recently set out at West Mill is PC Hi Cube #272742  loaded with kitchen stoves, washing machines, and dryers from Peerless Appliance for Lefty Martin Appliances.  The car was picked up as a priority single car move, expedited by a KP&W switcher and transfer caboose from Mayfield Yard.  The Hi Cube was sent to West Mill on a transfer run this morning.

The rumbling of first generation EMD locomotives fills the air as BW-4 emerges from the tunnel on the North side of West Mill, coming off the KP&W Mountain Branch.

Coming off the branch line and entering the shared PC/KP&W mainline trackage.

The train is made up of cars picked up at Bloomberg in the previous post.

An older blue and orange KP&W caboose brings up the rear.   The budget-conscious KP&W prides itself on maintaining older equipment so this crummy will be Bad Ordered at West Mill to repair the loose ladder at the head end!

BW-4 passes the yard entrance by WM tower and then backs the train into West Mill Yard.

P&LE #35602 at the rear of the train rolls past the watchful eye of Yardmaster Cappy Foster...

..who performs a visual inspection as the rest of the train passes by.

The KP&W GP9s come to a stop and are greeted by Cappy.  The Penn Central and KP&W have a pretty good working relationship although sometimes the smaller road employees bristle at what is perceived to be rude treatment by PC middle management.  Cappy, despite his tendency toward irritability, respects real railroad men and serves as a valuable liaison between crews from the two roads.

The cars pulled from GERN and Sal's Salvage, along with the cut from Bloomberg and the Hi Cube from Mayfield, will be assembled into Penn Central Train WMV-5 (West Mill To Selkirk).   This will be completed a little later today after three TOFCs, also to be included on WMV-5, arrive from a nearby trailer loading facility.

15:30 hours and the three Trailers On Flat Cars have arrived. The trailers were loaded at REVCO, Woodstock Hills Natural Sodas, and Catskill Mountain Press.

They are coupled up with PC Hi Cube #272742, the Burlington gon loaded with aluminum scrap, and the GERN car.

A West Mill Yard switcher will soon tack these five cars onto the rest of the string that will become WMV-5 for Selkirk.

Stay tuned for the dispatch of Train WMV-5 with cars destined for John's New York Central Train Layout and Brian's Ralston Creek layout!

Nice installment Ralph! West Mill continues to impress as a gritty waterfront rail yard! Good work on the three T.O.F.C. cars. Nice to see the Gern covered hopper and CB&Q gondola join the virtual ops.

    Elkhart Out.

Very enjoyable segment with lots of car movements and action. The PC and Rock Island are going to have some tonnage going West. I like the TOFC action with this series as well. Cappy Foster is true professional dealing with the crews of both railroads. Very enjoyable segment, looking forward to the action from West Mill to Selkirk.
