PCCM 112: Part 3 on the KPD

Greetings!

This is our 112th Penn Central Car Movement series (PCCM) also known as our "virtual ops" between John's New York Central Train Layout , Neal's Atlantic Pacific R.R. , and my own Kings Port Division.

Its time for the "Inbound" portions of our virtual ops, and boy do we have Inbounds!    Our Rail Traffic Management Form has John forwarding over 90 cars and several of those will be coming to the Kings Port Division!   In order to make all of this car forwarding more efficient and manageable John has dispatched cars in four trains for the KPD.

The ever busy Selkirk Yard will receive all four trains.

While our Rail Traffic Management Form scheduled the arrival of several cars from the N.Y.C.T.L., only two cars for the KPD are expected from Neal's APRR this series!  We'll see them arrive first on Penn Central transfer WV-2 from Weehawken to Selkirk today.

Its quiet now at West Mill except for a short MOW train waiting to leave southbound.   A cement covered hopper reportedly derailed on a siding near Tri Mount Cement and can hopefully just be lifted back onto the track. The crew heads to the the FP7 assigned to today's MOW duty.

The train includes the Big Hook which always attracts a lot of attention.

Emory, everyone's favorite railfan photographer and videographer, is seen here taking pictures of the train.  He's temporarily left his favorite photographic hunting ground near the Empire Belt RR.'s North Side Yard but you can bet that he'll be seen there again soon.

Nothing else is happening yet but keep an eye on the tunnel at the south end of town.

The morning quiet is shattered by WV-2 blasting its way into town!

A crewman uncouples the two KP&W boxcars to be set out at West Mill.  The distinctive orange and white Dresser Magcobar boxcar is a PCCM car loaded with bentonite that will stay on the train to Selkirk.

The WV-2 engine crew surprisingly "kicks" the KP&W boxcars onto the siding! After the WV-2 leaves the MOW train is cleared to depart.

West Mill's yard switcher #8951 picks up the two KP&W boxcars and brings them into the yard.  They will later be forwarded to Zenith TV

Turning our attention to Selkirk, the first arrival from Terminal Yard is APR-25 whose manifest includes cars for both Neal's APRR and my own Kings Port Division.  We catch the train just as its back end comprised of a pair of 86 foot auto parts cars, an LV boxcar, and four TOFCs comes to a stop.   Yard switching occurs in the foreground.

While most of the cars seen on the end of APR-25 are being forwarded to Mechanicville, Lehigh Valley boxcar #8247 was taken off the train and will be heading empty to Flint, MI this afternoon.

A little later the next train arriving from Terminal Yard is
TKW-01, a run-through to Williams Yard and West Mill powered by a pair of FP7s.  The scrap loads, coil coaches, and loaded coal hoppers are all for KP Steel in Kings Port.  Watch the TKW-01 meet OV-8 arriving from Buckeye Yard in Columbus headed by an F7A-B-B-A power set.  We then see the TKW-01 arrive later at Williams Yard in Kings Port.

The action continues as B&O Extra 251, a unit train of empty hoppers, runs through Selkirk toward Goodman St. Yard near Rochester where it will reconnect with B&O track.

One more train of cars for Williams Yard and West Mill is seen arriving at Selkirk!  A shorter than usual mixed manifest SK-5 appears on the scene needing only GP40 #3007 as power.  After the SK-5 comes to a stop we see BM-17 from Mechanicville arrive with interchange traffic.

After cars are humped and sorted Selkirk assembles and dispatches NY-20, a transfer to Mechanicville with the four TOFCs and the NIRX #42868 Dresser Magcobar boxcar from Texas loaded with Bentonite.

That's probably enough coverage for today!   Check back tomorrow as Selkirk dispatches a VW-1 to Weehawken that will stop at Kings Port and West Mill to drop off PCCM cars.

    Terminal Yard out...

Selkirk was hopping today!!! No doubt about that. The opening scene at West Mill with the MOW Train and 1:87 Emery was a good start to the inbound series and this post just kept getting better and better. The amount of train movements was awesome. Excellent work Ralph!!!
