P.C.C.M. #32: UKP-2, empty hoppers from KP Steel return to Hudson Coal

Last month UKP-1, a unit coal train, was sent from Hudson Coal to KP Steel.  After that URN-3 was sent from Hudson Coal to the Rochester Genesee coal docks.  Coal has been KING in recent P.C.C.M.s between the Kings Port Division and the New York Central Train Layout!   The trend continues as what will be a semi-regular movement between Hudson Coal and KP Steel is featured below.

Coal hoppers for KP Steel were unloaded and sit empty at the steel mill's holding yard.

A loud rumbling is heard as PC U30C #6538  emerges from Williams Yard to pick up the hoppers and become Unit Train UKP-2.

The U boat couples onto the hoppers and pulls them out of KP Steel.

The caboose is cut so the hoppers can later be backed into it, and then the loco does a runaround move to get to the head end.

The string of cars, now officially UKP-2, proceeds toward West Mill.

Arriving at West Mill and entering West Mill Yard.

After slowing to a stop at the end of West Mill Yard, the U Boat shuts down and the caboose is pulled by SD9 #6925

Later, SD9 #6925 gets the tricky assignment of loading the cars on the car float for the voyage to Port Owen.

The float is fully loaded.  The crew of the Tugboat Robert H. prepare to shove off for Port Owen.

That's it for another coal hopper move at West Mill!

  3. Always like seeing the barge action. That is neat. Happy to hear this will be a regular operation. Plus I got to see some more details of your layout.

  4. The float yard, in my opinion, is like a centerpiece of the layout. Great for staging trains, and has lots of action. Top notch work!

  5. Thanks guys! Much appreciated! I've been interested in car floats for years...ever since I saw one featured as part of an N scale layout in a 1970's issue of Model Railroader when I was a kid. As I recall the layout had a Penn Central/ B&M theme.
