URN-3 heads toward West Mill

Introducing a new "virtual op" between the Kings Port Division and the New York Central Train Layout!  Hudson Coal on the N.Y.C.T.L. is responding to orders from Canadian steel mills and power plants on Lake Ontario by sending unit coal trains to the Rochester/ Genesee Docks via West Mill.

See the great railfan action begin on the N.Y.C.T.L. blog:

The first of these trains URN-3 (URN being the train symbol for unit trains to Rochester) has been dispatched and is heading toward West Mill on the Kings Port Division.   Once it arrives at West Mill the Penn Central power and caboose will be cut in exchange for B&O units.   The Kings Port & Western is pooling power with the B&O on unit coal trains running from West Mill to the KP&W's farthest point in Western New York, the city of Salamanca which has connections with the B&O to Rochester.

John, of the N.Y.C.T.L, and I are still developing scenarios involving the route of the KP&W for future operations.  He suggested Salamanca, NY as a possible KP&W western terminus because of its history as a railroad town served by three Class 1 railroads.   I'm imagining my Class 2 KP&W reaching Salamanca as well.     For a little background on the city, check here:

Anyway, Train URN-3 has been dispatched from Hudson Coal with a GP30/GP40/GP38-2 consist.  The GP30 is still in its PRR livery. Since then it has been seen at a rural grade crossing in Marion, NY on the Kings Port Division

Drifting downgrade from Marion...

And later in Kings Port, north of West Mill, first passing behind the Kings Port Saints independent league ball club.  Opening Day is today!

URN-3 passes a slow moving KP&W transfer out of Fulton Ave Yard near Kings Port

The unit coal train reaches West Mill where it passes WM Tower allowing the ACI scanner recently installed there to record the long string of hoppers.

The train enters West Mill's Yard limits.

Next up:  Who's train is this!?   An exchange of power for the rest of the journey to Rochester.

  1. Great job Ralph! You were right that this train would photograph really well when you suggested Train URN-3 be added to the virtual ops! All photos look great. The shot of the engines behind the Saints ball park looked really cool. The last photo at West Mill is my favorite. Looks like something from a Classic Trains or TRP magazine photo! You can almost hear the diesels idling and smell the exhaust! Looking forward to the next installment!

  4. Superb! This part of the P.C.C.M. Car movements is adding so much dimension to the overall virtual op sessions. Looking forward to getting the A.P.R.R. back on track. Seems management decided the employee vacations were desperately needed and shut down the railroad to show compassion. Now everyone is back, time to fire up the engines!
