P.C.C.M. 59: 5th KPD installment. The KP&W takes over.

The Kings Port Division has a little more to go as the combination of cars sent its way this time created some interesting operational challenges and required thoughtful decisions to deliver them to consignees in as efficient manner as possible.  

Today the Kings Port & Western R.R. takes over the action sending cars three ways in an effort to deliver all of the cars forwarded to the Kings Port Division this series.  

Only three cars are scheduled to be forwarded from West Mill to King Port this time.   Usually traffic is much heavier and a Penn Central Turn from West Mill handles this op, but there aren't enough cars to justify a PC train out to Kings Port.  Fortunately a KP&W transfer run from Mayfield to Williams Yard (near Kings Port) is due to drop off cars at West Mill this morning so it can pick up the two coil cars and one PC boxcar and forward them to their respective destinations.   This is an example of the usually cooperative interchange between the two roads. 

In  preparation for the interchange, the West Mill yard switcher grabs the three cars

The PC boxcar is loaded with Freihoefers cookies for Battaglia's Bros. Warehouse.

 ...and the coil cars are empty for KP Steel.

The cars are moved to a ready track for the KP&W Transfer Run to pick up.  

The cut for the transfer is ready for pick up.

The Transfer Run from Mayfield arrives at West Mill with several PC cars in tow that will be dropped of at the yard.  The first generation diesels at the head end are typical KP&W power.

As the transfer run passes the waiting PC boxcar #360063 a cut of B&M cars reinforces our awareness of the connection the KP&W has with the New England road at Williams Yard. 

The train stops and a KP&W brakeman cuts the set-outs in front of the first B&M car.  

The characteristic EMD primer mover whine can be heard as the two KP&W units first pull and then push the PC cars across the road near Canton Box Co....

...and into the yard.

The blue and orange consist then returns to the main and couples onto the three car cut for Kings Port.

..and heads out of town.

As soon as the transfer leaves, the yard switcher crew gets to work pulling more cars for the next KP&W interchange.  These three cars will be set out at KP&W's Mountain Branch industries in or near Bloomberg such as Van Winkle Canning, Zenith TV, and Woodstock Hills Natural Soda.

The cars are pulled onto a track that can be easily accessed by a train dispatched from Williams Yard for Bloomberg.

The cut waits for the Bloomberg Run.

Meanwhile at Ulster Ave. a KP&W railfan dream comes true as the Bloomberg Run from Williams Yard meets the Mayfield Transfer 
that left West Mill an hour ago.

Three GP9s and an SD9 provide an EMD symphony!

Later, after the dust clears, the Mayfield Transfer reaches KP Steel and backs the two coil cars into the steel mill's holding yard.   

After setting out the coil cars the train continues to Williams Yard where it will be broken up....

...and PC 360063 is later delivered to Battaglia Bros. Warehouse as a single car move.

Battaglia Bros. is beyond Blue Ribbon Flour on this industrial spur.

Meanwhile the Bloomberg Run arrives at West Mill.

and the twin GP9's pick up the cut for Bloomberg industries.  

The train rolls past West Mill Yard and takes the KP&W cut off to its Mountain Branch up the Catskills.

One more job for the yard switcher crew...move cars for pick up by a KP&W return transfer later this evening from Williams Yard to Mayfield so they can be set out at industries like Peerless Appliance, ACME Auto Parts, and Cavendish Foods.

These four cars are placed in the same handy pocket for pick up by the Williams Yard Transfer due at 18:45 hours.
