P.C.C.M. 59: Prologue on the Kings Port Division

Hello everyone!

As our "virtual ops" group sets out on another series of Penn Central Car Movements (P.C.C.M.s) the Kings Port Division can be seen doing some work in preparation for  the arrival of Train WV-2 from Weehawken to Selkirk that will stop at West Mill to drop off and pick up cars for the ops.

Neal has started the ball rolling on this series by dispatching a train from his Rock Ridge Yard that will become WV-2.

Train RW-1 is dispatched from Rock Ridge Yard

It will stop at West Mill (tomorrow's blog post) but for now I'm posting about some preparations for the series on the Kings Port Division.

Included in this prep work are some "intra-layout moves", that is, car forwarding that stays on the Kings Port Division this time but sets the stage for the movement of some cars "off the layout" in the next series.  These moves are based on our all-powerful Rail Traffic Management Form which describes cycles of car movements for each car we own in common and can photograph as part of the virtual ops.  Intra-layout moves are fun, create more operational realism, and also help increase the variety of car movements for each piece of rolling sock involved in the virtual ops.

The intra-layout moves this time include:

Picking up an NYC Hi Cube and IC boxcar, both empties, from Reynolds Beverage Distributors.   A PC local headed by a GP7 handles the chore while a PC coal train and KP&W "steel job" roll by in the background.

Picking up the Hi Cube and boxcar...

Later the cars were interchanged with the KP&W which sets out the IC boxcar at Woodstock Hills Natural Soda.

...The Hi Cube will be set out at Peerless Appliance by a KP&W local out of Mayfield Yard after it picks up these cars; a red GM&O boxcar, a B&M boxcar, and a PC Hi Cub.  Keep your eyes on the red GM&O car which will also be featured in an intra-layout move.

The NYC Hi Cube is set aside before being spotted at a Peerless Appliance loading door so the local can pull the other cars out, including the oversize load on the depressed well flat.

The pick ups are gone and the empty NYC Hi Cube that came from Reynolds Beverage Distributors is now waiting for loading at Peerless Appliance.

Here's that red GM&O car after being interchanged with the Penn Central at West Mill Yard.  Its being set out empty at GULF to be loaded with barrels of cutting oil for Walsh Steel Wool

More KP&W work was performed at ACME Auto Parts where an aging empty NYC Pacemaker was picked up along with three empty 60 foot auto parts cars that will eventually go to Ford Motor Co.

The Pacemaker is later set out by the Penn Central at KP Steel Supply to be loaded with new 55 gallon drums for Drywell inks.

While working KP Steel the local's GP7 picks up this empty 38 foot A.P.R.R. hopper...

..that later finds itself on a train serving Hedberg Aggregates

...where it is spotted for loading for New York State's DOT Area 10 highway project.

All of the intra-layout moves are now completed. These cars will head off layout during our next series, P..C.C.M. 60.    Picking them up and setting them out also involved the movement of other cars to West Mill Yard that will go off layout during our current #59 series.

These include cars from Peerless Appliance such as the depressed well flat with the oversize air conditioner load being pushed into the West Mill Yard by a KP&W transfer out of Mayfield.

Other cars on this train include a 40 ft. B&M boxcar and PC Hi Cube heading to the Denver area featured on Brian's Ralston Creek blog.

The three auto parts cars previously seen being pulled from ACME Auto Parts are headed for Ford on the N.Y.C.T.L.

In other moves, the KP&W picks up this LV car loaded with new beer bottles at Corning Glass.  The car will be forwarded from Selkirk to Denver for the Tivoli Beer company.

Three cars from Blue Ribbon Flour.  Here is Blue Ribbon...

...and its lower level industrial lead track.  Cars load at Blue Ribbon under that bridge.

The three cars from Blue Ribbon are set out for easy pick up by a passing PC "Turn" from West Mill.  The two covered hoppers have flour for Ronzoni while the SP boxcar is headed toStar Bread Co.

They are later seen at West Mill after being brought in by the Turn

Other cars from KP Steel...six empty hoppers for Hudson Coal...

...and two loaded steel coil cars for Ford come into West Mill on a PC run from Kings Port with an F7A-B consist at the head end.

The cars now wait at West Mill Yard for Train WV-2 to take them to Selkirk and beyond.

A single car move from nearby Sal's Salvage picks up this CB&Q gon loaded with scrap, destined for Denver.

More cars for this series are transferred to West Mill from The KP&W's Williams Yard.

Three TOFC with empty trailers

A Hoschton Railway Company RBL

..and this BAR car that hasn't been seen in a P.C.C.M. series for a looong time!  We feared it might become part of the PC folklore involving lost rolling stock loaded with perishables.

All of the cars that will be sent out from the Kings Pot Division for this series have been gathered at West Mill.

Stay tuned for the arrival of WV-2 with cars from the A.P.R.R. as the ops continue!

  1. Nice work getting ready for the #59. Your structures and scenery are always great to look at. Some of those freight cars are timeless treasures. My new favorite car is the Lehigh Valley White box car!

    1. Thanks Neal! I'm liking that LV car myself and am working to create more of a sense of a connection with the LV on my layout.
