The Seven Engine Itch Spreads to the Kings Port Division!

John R. of the New York Central Train Layout posted a blog entry about creating seven locomotive consists.  He had asked for other modelers to contribute photos of such lash ups but a technical glitch prevented them from being successfully published.  Since then fellow modelers Neal and John B. have posted the uncooperative photographs on their own blogs so we can see what John R. intended.

Here is John R's post starting it all:

John B.'s version:

The Kings Port Division follows suit and offers the photos of a GP38-2, F7A, FP7 seven unit consist that passed through Kings Port recently.  GP38-2 #8045 takes the lead as the only hood unit in a line of cab units.  Fortunate power matches on my DC layout made this fairly easy with the mix of three powered and four dummy locos.

followed by F7a #1802 and B unit 3489...

A short steel coil train on the upper level is pulled by only one locomotive as seven unit power rolls below!

Video of the seven unit consist at Kings Port.

This was a fun concept and the photos from all four blogs provided excellent images of lots of power!

  1. Nice photos of the Seven Engine Itch and the video as well. I think all of us made the Penn Central proud to be living on thru our modeling efforts!

  2. Really great looking consist. I think it’s great to show seven units operating together with both DC and DCC across the different blogs. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more “Wasteful Dispatching” in the future. Really makes for some fun posts.

    1. Thanks Brian,

I may stage a few of these larger consists for the sake of the virtual ops. I like the idea of extra locomotives running with a train so they can provide power for trains coming back later. The consist in this post actually could run the layout successfully but would be hard to accommodate at West Mill Yard's small engine facility.

  4. Now that was just too good to be legal ! I don't know what I am more jealous of, the 7 locos or the space to show them all off. Thanks for the photos and video.
