PCCM 85: Part 5 on the KPD

 Hello everybody,

We're continuing out "inbound" portions of this 85th Penn Central Car Movement series, our so called "virtual ops" between layouts over a 1000 miles apart.  John's New York Central Train Layout , and Neal's Atlantic Pacific R.R. , both sent trains to my Kings Port Division.  Now its time to forward the cars on those trains to their respective consignees.

Our Rail Traffic Management Form that serves as the freight traffic generator for our operations provides a lot of variety from PCCM to PCCM series.  While there are usually a number of cars going to Mayfield Yard for the KP&W to deliver to local industries, only two "virtual ops " cars are heading there this time.  They include KP&W boxcar #15638 which is loaded with rivets and hardware fixtures for Amalgamated Container Co. and PC Hi Cube #272747 loaded with bulk hardware for Peerless Appliance.

I've included three additional non-player cars to make the trip to

Mayfield worthwhile.

These cars are waiting for the next KP&W Mayfield Transfer to arrive at West Mill for one of its typical car exchange moves.  The "MT" can be seen arriving off the Mayfield Branch below.  LV GP9 #300 is a new addition to the locomotive roster on the KPD.  The King Port & Western connects with the Lehigh Valley in Mayfield.  Sometimes LV units are pooled with KP&W locomotives for runs like this.

Watch The "MT" arrive with its rumbling Alco RS3 on the point, back its cars into West Mill Yard, tack their caboose on the rear of the cut of cars to take back to Mayfield, and then roll out of the yard.

After pulling the cars out of the yard the consist does a runaround move putting LV #300 in the lead for the return trip to Mayfield.

Listen to the GP9's whine as the train leaves West Mill in the video below.

After arriving at Mayfield the two virtual ops cars are put on a local that sets them out at Amalgamated Container Co. and Peerless Appliance.

Returning now to West Mill Yard, a transfer run to the KP&W's Williams Yard is being assembled.

The virtual ops cars on this train include EBRR gondola #509823 loaded with pipes from Shapless Steel for the Hudson Valley Ag Coop and NYC covered hopper #892010 loaded with wheat flour from Cargill (Rock Ridge) for Blue Ribbon Flour.

The train includes some non-player cars headed for Williams Yard.

Watch the power for the West Mill Transfer, a pair of RSD12s, leave the engine facilities and couple up to their train in the video below:

Watch the Transfer to Williams Yard leave West Mill in the video below:

While the Transfer travels to Kings Port,  Switcher #8951 pulls a cut of cars for the next KP&W WiBi to Binghamton.  All four of these cars are headed to IBM.  The NYC Hi Cube at the far end is loaded with hardware for American Hardware (Rock Ridge) while the three PC RBLs contain wooden shipping crates from Mike's Lumber.

While these cars await the WiBi that will soon be dispatched from Williams Yard, the West Mill Transfer to Williams Yard arrives at Kings Port where it will soon encounter the aforementioned WiBi!

The WiBi is powered by a pair of EMD F7As with an aging C Liner on the point!   KP&W #890 is the last remaining Fairbanks-Morse power on the line.  It will likely be retired soon so local railfans are always excited to see it leading another run out of Williams Yard.

Watch the WiBi slowly head out of Williams Yard, stop to allow the West Mill Transfer go by, and then proceed to West Mill in the video below:

While the WiBi heads to West Mill, the West Mill Transfer stops in Williams Yard.

Its not long before the NYC covered hopper and its non-player PC mate are pulled from the Transfer and delivered to Blue Ribbon.

EBRR gon #509823 is positioned at the unloading dock so its pipes can be transferred to the Hudson Valley Coop.

That's all for today.  Check back tomorrow to see the latest WiBi arrive at West Mill...and more!

PCCM #85: Part 4 on the KPD

 Hello everyone and welcome back!

Assuming that you have been following this 85th "virtual op" between John's New York Central Train Layout , Neal's Atlantic Pacific R.R. , and my own Kings Port Division you know that we dispatched trains to each other's layouts last weekend.  Now its time to focus on those trains as they arrive with cars to be forward to various consignees.

John dispatched train SK-5 from Terminal Yard and after it turned the corner at Selkirk is heading south toward King Port and West Mill on my layout.

Things have been quiet for a little while in Kings Port this afternoon but soon the blast of a GP38-2 horn alerts us that SK-5 is coming into town!

Watch the train arrive and then stop to drop off cars in the video below:

SK-5 will be dropping off four empty steel coil coaches for KP Steel and two cars for Williams Yard on the interchange track with the Kings Port & Western here.   The cars are cut in front of a gon loaded with scrap metal from Gershow Recycling.

Watch the set out in the video below:

SK-5's crew leaves the cars on either side of Ulster Ave. crossing.

Watch the train's power come out of the interchange, couple up with the remaining cars and continue to West Mill in the video below:

The train works its way to West Mill

SK-5 arrives at West Mill, passing by Sal's Salvage as it approaches the yard.

As the train enters West Mill Yard a pair of gondolas loaded with raw scrap passes two gons at Sal's loaded with shredded scrap.  It won't be long before the pairs of gons trade places as the KP&W and Michigan Central RR gons are scheduled to be set out at Sal's Salvage.

While SK-5 rolls into West Mill Yard from the north, Penn Central train WV-1 from Weehawken arrives from the south end of town on its way to Selkirk.  WV-1 will drop off a number of cars forwarded from the APRR.  The two trains' consists pass each other in opposite directions below.

VW-1 stretches the length of West Mil Yard as it slows to a stop.

The cut from the APRR ends with PC Hi Cube #272747 loaded with American Hardware (Rock Ridge) products for Peerless Appliance.

The APRR cut pulls ahead while the rest of SK-5 rolls into the yard.

Watch SK-5 and WV-1 roll into West Mill Yard in the video below.

Meanwhile back at Kings Port the two sets of cars left on the interchange are pulled in opposite directions as a KP&W S-12 brings two cars into Williams Yard and an industrial switcher claims the four coil coaches.

Watch the action in the video below:

After the interchange cars are pulled into Williams Yard LV #66392 loaded with batteries from Presto Lite (Allentown, PA) for Irwin Marine in Lakeport NH, which was seen last week passing through West Mill on the BiWi, and the Swift reefer (being returned empty to Swift from Ralph's Grocery Warehouse) are included on Extra 1701 to Springfield, MA powered by a B&M GP9 and F7A.

PC plug door boxcar #160502 seen below being moved by a Williams Yard switcher, is placed on the next Williams Yard-to- Binghamton Transfer (the WiBi).   The car is loaded with bulk hardware from American Hardware (NYCTL) for IBM.

The train powered by a KP&W GP9-F7B-GP9 consist leaves Williams Yard...

....with PC 160502 right beyond the locomotives.

Follow the car on the WiBi as it runs through West Mill on its way to Binghamton in the video below:

PC #160502 is spotted at IBM in Binghamton a day later.

That's it for today.  Stay tuned for more tomorrow as there is a lot more car forwarding to be done!

PCCM 85: Part 3 on the KPD

 Greetings all!

This is the third and final "outbound" installment from the Kings Port Division for this 85th series of Penn Central Car Movements otherwise known as the "virtual ops" between my layout, John's New York Central Train Layout, and Neal's Atlantic Pacific R.R..

Yesterday we observed the crew board this three unit consist of a PC FP7, a PRR F7A, and a PC F7B in preparation for a run to Selkirk where the cars on this train will be placed on a freight to Terminal Yard in Empire City on John's layout.

Watch the train now designated as Extra 4362 leave West Mill in the video below:

In anticipation of Extra 4362's arrival at Kings Port the KP&W has moved cars destined for the NYCTL to the interchange tracks there for pick up.  The Extra finds them set out when it arrive in Kings Port.

They include four TOFCs and a 40' Hoschton Railway car.  The Extra's power uncouples from the train, couples up to the TOFCs...

...and then shoves the cut of trailers into the HRC car waiting near the KP& office building.

The locomotives run around the interchange cars to get in front of them and back them into the rest of the train.

KP Tower reports clearance for Extra 4362 to proceed to Selkirk.  Watch the train leave in the video below:

With the train for John's layout on its way lets turn our attention to a cut of cars destined for Rock Ridge Yard on the APPR.

The cut includes only four cars this time.  Our virtual ops traffic generating tool known as the Rail Traffic Management Form schedules varied amounts of traffic between layouts from series to series.  Sometimes one layout will move a lot more cars than the others.  Traffic is light from the KPD to the APRR this time around.  We refer to this as the "caprice of the RTMF!"

The cars include KP&W #30112 & 30115 from Quality Fabrications loaded with catalytic converter assemblies for Ideal Auto Parts and Empire Belt #360279 from International Paper loaded with bulk paper for Marcal Paper....

...along with this NYC double door boxcar from Half Moon Wholesale Lumber Distributors loaded with wood for Mike's Lumber.

The cut has been set out on a siding for the next Southbound Selkirk to Weehawken run (VW-1) to pick up on its way.   About two hours after the cars were set out the thrumming of a GP40/GP30 consist can be heard as it slows at West Mill.

Watch VW-1 arrive in the video below:

VW-1's power leaves the train to pick up the APRR cut

Watch video of the action as the APPR cars are added to the train before VW-1 proceeds to Weehawken in the video below:

That's it for the outbounds in this series.  Come back next weekend as trains from John's and Neal's layouts arrive on the Kings Port Division!
