P.C.C.M. 41K: The West Mill Turn out of Mayfield Yard

Hi all!

Hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving and are ready for more railroading on the Kings Port Division!

Continuing to forward cars from Terminal Yard on John's New York Central Train Layout to their consignees, the West Mill Yard crew pulls cars that will be picked up by the Kings Port & Western's "West Mill Turn" that runs back and forth from Mayfield.

In anticipation of the train's arrival, yard switcher #6925 moves cars to reach 86 foot auto parts car NYC #67086  and P&E boxcar #3638.

...and three NYC 50 foot double door cars.

Cars in front of the trio of NYC 50 footers are pulled away...

Switched to the next track...

...so the NYC trio can be picked up by the yard's SD9.

They are then switched to the next track to the right...

...and pushed down the yard track into a pair of cars in front of the NYC 86 footer and the P&E car they need to pull.

The cut continues down the yard track until they back into them.

The two cars in the way, P&LE #35892 and Penn Central #104478, are set aside..

The five cars intended for the West Mill Turn are then coupled together, and pulled from the yard...

Once they reach the switches by WM Tower they are backed into the ready track. A commuter run can bee seen in the background.

Approaching the ready track, NYC #67086 is heading empty to ACME Auto Parts while P&E #3638 is going to Cavendish Foods with printed packaging from Berk Enterprises.

The three  NYC double door boxcars are destined for Peerless Appliance where they will be loaded with high quality, reliable washers, dryers, and refrigerators. This is a paid ad!  :)

After the cut for Mayfield is set out on the ready track SD9 #6925 pulls away and returns to the yard.

An hour later, a red signal indicates traffic will be coming off the Mayfield branch.

The "West Mill Turn" from Mayfield arrives, headed by RS3 #566

The transfer caboose at the end of the Turn passes the cars it will soon be coupled to for the return trip to Mayfield.

Approaching WM Tower, the train will make a back up move there to couple the caboose to the cars heading to Mayfield

Backing into the cut for Mayfield, a yard crewman confers with the Turn's conductor.  Life would be easier if West Mill was a double ended yard!!!

The Turn pulls away, leaving the transfer caboose on its return train...

...and the incoming cars are set out at West Mill with IC #30130 in the lead.  The cars heading back to Mayfield can be seen in the background.

After a short delay, the KP&W RS3 leaves the yard to get in front of the cars it is taking back to Mayfield.

The runaround complete,  #566 backs into the train just beyond West Mill Yard Tower

Easy does it!

Once #566 couples on, the engineer throttles up and pushes the cars back past WM tower so they can access the main and head toward Mayfield.  The conductor on the back porch protects the shove.

Picking up train orders from WM Tower before departing West Mill.

And then....Mayfield bound!

Later that afternoon P&E #3638 is set out at Cavendish Foods.

NYC #67086 is set out at ACME Auto Parts

...and the three NYC double door 50 foot boxcars are delivered to Peerless Appliance.

That's the work for today!   Thanks for taking a look!

    Rock Ridge Yard Out!

Nice Work on the train arriving from Mayfield. The photo of the RS-3 crossing over from above is Great! Seems Peerless Appliance is a very busy business to accept 3 cars. Paid advertising works!

    Terminal Yard out...

Nice work Ralph! PC SD9 and the KP&W Alco RS unit were nice treats. The R.T.M.F. moves setting up the next P.C.C.M. were duly noted and appreciated. The ACME, Cavendish and Peerless facades looked great. Well done!

  3. Nice looking rolling stock and power! I'm with John, always like to see your PC SD9's in action. My BN SD9 always looks nervous when I see your PC SD9's. I've had it since I was twelve, so no worries about it getting repainted. If I find a used SP or UP version, it's a done deal. Looks like you've been doing some weathering and detailing to the fleet. I've always been a big fan of your subtle touches to the layout.
