P.C.C.M. 67: Part G

Hello,

In this 67th virtual ops series John, Neal, and I posted in quick succession to feature the movement of a coal train originating as a string of empties from Neal's Atlantic Pacific R.R. ,stopping at West Mill on my layout to pick up more empties, and then proceeding to John's New York Central Train Layout where the hoppers were loaded at his Hudson Coal facility.  The loaded train was then dispatched back to my layout and then eventually to Neal's.

I wanted to keep the momentum going so I didn't post about all of the related secondary moves from West Mill after the loaded coal train stopped by to drop off cars there.   As an epilogue to P.C.C.M. 67 the Kings Port Division is now presenting the final delivery of cars involved in this large coal op.

Two cuts of loaded hoppers at West Mill Yard are ready to be forwarded to their consignees. These cars came off the coal drag dispatched from John's Terminal Yard.

The first is set-out on the car float for Port Owen Power and Light.

The second cut in the background behind the car float is for KP Steel and will be delivered by a Penn Central local.

Before that happens West Mill will work with a KP&W coal transfer from Mayfield that includes cars routed from their LV coal connection.  These now loaded cars will be forwarded to the Genesee coal docks in Rochester by the KP&W.

The KP&W's hard working RS3 #566 leads the hoppers into West Mill.

West Mill Yard's usually hard working SW9 # 8951 can take it easy this time.  The KP&W is going to take care of the set-out.

KP&W's Coal Extra #566 leads the cars beyond the yard entrance and then backs them onto an easy ready track for future pick up.

The conductor gives the WM Towerman a friendly wave.

Passing the closed West Mill Station while backing into the siding.

The loaded hoppers are set out and ready for pick up by the next KP&W train heading westward.  The switcher's crew enjoys just watching the action.

RS3 #566 separates from the train and grabs its caboose.

The Alco and cabin car rest while waiting for their opportunity to pull some boxcars for the return trip to Mayfield.

The loaded hoppers for the Genesee docks are waiting for pick up

A red indication on the north end of town alerts railfans of the approach of the anticipated KP&W Westbound

Railfans get a nice surprise as some temporarily purloined B&M units sequestered by the KP&W at Williams Yard lead a coal train!

This is the KP&W's WS-1 from Williams Yard to Salamanca, NY powered by an F7A/ GP9/F7B

The pooled power is uncoupled at West Mill to pick up the hoppers from Mayfield.

Rolling past the hoppers to get in front of them for pick-up.

A lucky railfan next to the West Mill sign takes photos as the mixed consist rolls by

I wish I'd thought to have taken railroading pictures during the Penn Central era!!!!

The cut of hoppers from Mayfield is picked up...

...and backed into the waiting train

Watch the B&M/KP&W units add the string of hoppers from Mayfield to WS-1 in the video below:

The train is coupled up and gets permission to proceed westward.

Watch the train leave West Mill in the video below:

Later that day two trains are set up for departure.  KP&W #566 will be taking its string of boxcars back to Mayfield....

We won't focus on that train since we're most concerned with the movement of coal traffic in this series!   Take my word for it that the KP&W DOES forward these cars to Mayfield!  :)

The second train which we WILL follow is a string of loaded coal hoppers for KP Steel, powered by Penn Central RSD12s often assigned to trains to Kings Port. The train is designated Extra 6865.

Extra 6865 heading for KP Steel's holding yard is underway!

Passing rural scenes near Marion...

Reaching the summit of the Kings Port Division...

..and finally arriving at KP Steel.

The caboose is cut so the cars can be set out.

Watch the last coal cars of the series get set out at KP Steel in the video below:

That concludes the coal operation in P.C.C.M. 67!  Thanks for following along on this end of the year special between the A.P.R.R., the K.P.D., and the N.Y.C.T.L.!

    Rock Ridge yard Out!

Excellent wrap up to the series and year! I must admit the car float always grab my attention as it's something not every model railroad has. Also, I see the F7/GP9/F7 consist is very popular these days.
I did take some pics of the PC back in the day just before they were history, wish I could find them.

Thanks for a great series. As a final note, the area in and around Rock Ridge will have a nice winter thanks in part to the help from both railroads getting coal delivered to the power plant.

Great wrap up to the P.C.C.M. 67 series Ralph!!! That was a lot of fine railroading taking place in and around West Mill that definitely needed to be recorded and posted. Nice work getting the various railroads, coal connections and float operations smoothly interchanging their coal hoppers and freight cars. It was a pleasure to read and watch and I'm glad you took the initiative to close out P.C.C.M. 67 in such a grand fashion. Well Done!!

  3. Nice finish to your part of the series. I like the F7A/B + GP9 lash up. It looked 'unique' to me to see the B unit at the end of the brace. Good read!

    1. The KP&W seems to mimic the sometimes eccentric lashup practices observed on the PC!
