P.C.C.M . 73: Part 1 on the KPD

Hello again!

We're off and running on our 73rd "virtual ops" series between layouts that are a thousand miles apart.  Thanks to a mutual appreciation of the  Penn Central we call these operations series "Penn Central Car Movements" or "P.C.C.M.s" for short.

Here we go again and you're invited to join along.

Today I'm posting about movements I made in anticipation of forwarding freight cars to John's  New York Central Train Layout  and Neal's  Atlantic Pacific R.R.

Starting at the interchange track between the PC and my freelanced Kings Port & Western R.R. we see PRR 86 footer #125291, just set out and waiting to be picked up by a southbound PC train to West Mill.   This car was noteworthy for its recent involvement in an emergency toilet paper shipment to Battaglia Brothers Warehouse.   The car is now empty for return to Rock Ridge Yard on the APRR.

After spotting the PRR car, S12 switcher #34 from Williams Yard also sets out PC #360158 and two 38 foot hoppers.   The PC boxcar is loaded with bagged flour from Blue Ribbon for Hostess in Empire City.  The two hoppers had been loaded with ballast for MOW at Williams Yard and are now being sent empty to Hudson Coal to load for Corning Glass Co.'s power plant.

The three cars are waiting for a northbound PC train to Selkirk for eventual forwarding to Terminal Yard.

Meanwhile at KP Steel six empty hoppers and two loaded Evans steel coil coaches are about to be pushed out to the interchange.  The coil cars are for Gervais Pipe and Fittings

The empty hoppers are for Hudson Coal to load for RMO Electric on Neal's layout.

Watch the action at KP Steel in the video below:

The two KP Steel industrial switchers are new creations from my "purgatory box" of junk equipment.  I've had them for over 30 years and finally decided to make something of them.  They were inspired by Neal recently posting about his Tropicana plant having its own company switcher.  These KP Steel company switchers are actually unpowered.  I'll admit to having a little fun with them by placing a powered loco at the end of the string of cars and pulling them out to make it seem as if the little switchers were doing the work.

The hoppers and coil cars now wait for a northbound to Selkirk along with the two 38 foot hoppers and PC boxcar #360158.

Before they are picked up, southbound PC Extra #5689 arrives to take the PRR 86 footer to West Mill.    See the Extra arrive with its GP9/ F7B consist in the video below:

The train is cut to avoid blocking Ulster Ave.

and then moves to pick up the PRR 86 footer in the video below:

Other cars soon to be heading to either the  APRR or N.Y.C.T.L. are picked up by a Kings Port Turn out of West Mill.  It is seen below picking up an A.P.R.R hopper loaded with aggregate for New York State DOT Region 10's thruway project.

While there, the Turn sets out two PS-2 covered hoppers that were picked up at the Kings Port Engine yard where they dispensed locomotive sand for the yard's sand towers. This is one of my intra-layout moves in this series.

The Turn picks up three cars at Reynolds Beverage Distributors and Booms Ready Mix.  The EL boxcar and NYC Early Bird with the jade door are loaded with bagged cement for Gotham Bldg. Supply and Neal's Lumber respectively.   PC boxcar #104478 is picked up empty for an intra-layout move to Amalgamated Container.

The Kings Port Turn also picks up GM&O boxcar #21129 for an intra-layout move to Quality Fabrications and two tankers of fuel for Ford Motor Co.

Turning our attention the next day to the Mayfield area, the Kings Port & Western pulls an aged NYC Pacemaker now loaded with new 55 gallon drums for Drywell Ink and Empire Belt gon #509823 loaded with storage tanks for West Chemical.

After pulling the two cars it sets out PC boxcar #104478 that was pulled from Reynolds Beverage Distributors to be loaded with more drums for Drywell Ink.

The cars are brought to Mayfield Yard where they are later tacked onto a transfer run to West Mill seen arriving below.

Most of the cars are loaded hoppers for the car float to take to Port Owen's power plant.

But, the two cars pulled from ACCO are seen at the tail end...

..and seen again later spotted in the yard.

After setting out the Pacemaker and EBRR gon the transfer pushes the coal cars into the yard.

Lets take a look at what the Bloomberg Branch is offering in this P.C.C.M. series.   Switching action at the industrial park includes Picking up IC boxcar #3130 and KP&W #644450 and 644455, all loaded with soda from Woodstock Hills.  The IC car is heading to Ralph's Grocery warehouse on John's layout while the two KP&W cars are going to C&P Restaurant Supply on Neal's.

And now, from Van Winkle Canning, a Hoschton Railway RBL is picked up empty for Canton Box Co. as an intra-layout move.

Moving over to Quality Fabrications, two more KP&W boxcars #30112 and 30115 are pulled, loaded with catalytic converters for Ideal Auto Parts on Neal's layout

Before heading back to West Mill three NYC double door boxcars are spotted at Zenith TV as an intra-layout move. The cars were forwarded empty from IBM in Binghamton.  The red GM&O boxcar #21129 that was pulled earlier from Gulf, seen behind the NYC cars,  was set out at Quality Fabrications.

Its work done, the Bloomberg Run returns to West Mill with cars for this P.C.C.M.

Watch the action as the Bloomberg Run holds for a train of empty hoppers before setting the cars out at West Mill Yard.

Cars now at West Mill Yard to be forwarded to the A.P.R.R. include:

PRR 125291  Empty for Rock Ridge Yard

Stay tuned!

I think I covered everything! A great start to P.C.C.M. 73 Ralph!!! That was a tremendous amount of both inter and intra layout freight car moves clearly defined and well photographed with superb videos. Sounds were great. A hearty welcome to the KP Steel Industrial units 2 and 3! Man, that was great!!! I'll be rereading and watching several more times!

    Rock Ridge Yard Out!

I’m very happy to hear that you were inspired by my Tropicana switcher to add some new switchers to the layout. They came out great and I’m sure both will enhance the industry! The A.P.R.R. will be ready to have those inbound freight cars dispatched to the appropriate consignees!

  3. Thanks Neal! The use of company switchers sounded reasonable for a big industry like KP Steel. Thanks for the inspiration!
