P.C.C.M.81: Part 1 on the KPD

Hello everyone,

Here we are again embarking on another Penn Central Car Movement series, our 81st venture into the so called  "virtual ops" between John's New York Central Train Layout , Neal's Atlantic Pacific R.R. , and my own Kings Port Division!

As usual I'm starting off by showing various trains bringing cars to West Mill Yard that will later be assembled into trains for the N.Y.C.T.L. and the A.P.R.R.

Its a busy day at West Mill as crews for both a Northbound Turn...

...and a Local Yard Job board their locomotives.

The Northbound Turn, headed by a pair of Alco RSD12s, will be composed of this string of "non-player" freight cars.  Its the cars that the "out-and-back" Turn will later bring back to West Mill that are of interest for our virtual ops.

Meanwhile the Yard's SW9 switcher #8951 is assigned to a Local Yard Job to pick up a couple of cars from nearby Canton Box Co. and Empire Grain.   Two trains set to depart!  Watch the RSD12s leave the engine tracks, couple to their train, pull out of West Mill, and be closely followed by #8951 getting ready for its local job in the video below:

After the Northbound Turn leaves, the switcher gets to work.  It passes Canton Box where it will return later to pick up TP&W 627. The Yard Local heads first to Empire Grain...

..to grab this covered hopper.

Picking up NYC #892010 loaded with grain for Ronzoni

In position now, the switcher pulls TP&W #627 full of boxes for Schaefer Brewing...

...And the first cars of this series enter West Mill Yard!

The switcher runs around them, ready for its next assignment.

Meanwhile the Northbound turn has reached the South Kings Port Team Track and Reynolds Beverage Distributors where it sets out some "non-player" cars.

Continuing its run, the Turn approaches Hedberg Aggregates where it will pick up two "virtual ops" cars,

They are a pair of two bay covered hoppers, KP&W #844502 and PC #883190, loaded with crushed aggregates for the NYS DOT Region #10 Project.

On the way back to West Mill the Turn stops at the riverside Gulf Oil facility to pick up a string of tankers and red GM&O boxcar # 21129 which has been loaded with 55 gallon drums of lube oil for Terminal Yard's engine service area.

The caboose and one tanker to be set out here are cut from the train.

The Turn backs into Gulf to pick up the tankers and the GM&O car.

The single tanker is grabbed for the set out.

After the exchange of tankers is completed the train couples up to its caboose and heads back to West Mill Yard.

As the Northbound Turn nears West Mill another train, The Bloomberg Turn, is seen arriving at West Mill where it waits for the Northbound Turn before attempting to back into the yard.

Watch the North Bound Turn arrive at West Mill while the Bloomberg Turn waits to enter the Yard in the video below:

The Bloomberg Turn has pulled forward of the yard entrance by the Grape Nuts billboard and will back into the yard.

Watch that action in the video below as, along with some non-player cars, the Bloomberg Turn brings in two orange KP&W cars, #644450 and #644455, loaded with Woodstock Hills natural soda for ShopRite on Neal's layout and Rock Island boxcar #35062 full of Zenith TVs for All City Storage on John's layout:

One more train that will be coming into West Mill with "virtual ops" cars is this Southbound Turn headed by a GP9/GP7 lashup.  Its seen below picking up cars at Half Moon Wholesale Lumber.

The "virtual ops" cars here are the two Southern RR bulkhead flatcars loaded with lumber for Gotham Building Supply. Other Southern RR non-player cars are included in this pickup.

Watch the train arrive at West Mill from the South end of town in the video below:

The Southbound Turn is then seen approaching the Yard Entrance

The two bulkhead flats can be seen passing by.
The caboose is just about clear of the yard entrance turnout.

Watch the Southbound Turn back its cars into West Mill Yard in the video below:

That will do it for today.  Tomorrow will follow a KP&W transfer run from Mayfield, the KP&W's daily BiWi from Binghamton to Williams Yard, and some KP&W action in Kings Port.

The locals have their hands full for sure! The Gulf Oil facility has caught my eye in this P.C.C.M. Very impressive as is the wharf area in front of it. You did a great job with Half Moon Wholesale Lumber

    Terminal Yard out...

Great post to start off the outbound weekend on the KPD Ralph!! You had me from the NB Turn's RSD12s! The opening scenes with the trainmen heading to their respective engines was cool to see and brought the whole installment to life. The gentle coupling and horn blasting out of West Mill were great sound effects. I caught GP20 #2107 working solo today and he looked good on protecting the Bloomberg Turn Job. Well done!
