PCCM 99: Part 2 on the KPD

Hello again!

We're running our 99th Penn Central Car Movement Series, which rather amazes me!   In this three-layout series John's New York Central Train Layout and Neal's Atlantic Pacific R.R. are exchanging cars with my own Kings Port Division.

I'm currently preparing cuts of cars to send to the N.Y.C.T.L. and the APRR.  Several of these "virtual ops"cars arrived at West Mill in the previous installment, filling up up the yard.

The West Mill crew gets to work freeing up some yard space by setting six loaded coal hoppers on the next car float to Port Owen.  The hoppers are for the Con Ed power plant.

The next job is to create a transfer run to the KP&W's Mayfield Yard.  This train will include a number of empty coal hoppers, including virtual ops cars KP&W 233 & 234 that will be forwarded to the Lehigh Valley for loading at Pennsylvania coal mines.

Follow some of the yard work involved in assembling the cut for the transfer run.  The switcher begins by moving cars out of the way and tacking them onto a string for Selkirk on Track #2.

Now that the transfer run to Mayfield has been assembled, two RSD12s back it out of the yard to start the journey to the KP&W's Mayfield Yard.

Watch the action in the video below:

After the transfer run leaves, switcher #8951 continues to organize cars in the yard and prepares for a short Yard Local run.

The Yard Local heads out for Canton Box Co. to perform a pick-up/ set-out exchange.  This single industry run can take a little time!

Here's the current situation at West Mill Yard.  The cut of cars in the foreground (including six of the 2 bay cement hoppers) will be forwarded to Neal's APRR.  The cut behind it with the tankers and empty hoppers is for the N.Y.C.T.L.'s Terminal Yard via Selkirk.    The red Triangle Pacific car and the Swift reefer in the background will also be heading to Selkirk to be placed on other trains.

The switcher keeps sorting cars.  These three, GM&O #21129, IC #30319, and LV #8247 are intra-layout move cars.

More cars will be arriving at West Mill to add to each of these cuts!  The first group arrives on the returning Bloomberg Turn.   An unusually large number of cars are coming down from the Catskills on this run!

A crewman aligns the switch for the Turn to back into West Mill.

The Bloomberg Turn backs into the yard and sets out the cars in predetermined blocks.

Four KP&W cars are joining the cut headed for the APRR.  The two seen below are loaded with Woodstock Hills Natural Soda for ShopRite.

The other two are carrying catalytic converter assemblies from ACME Auto Parts for IDEAL Auto in Rock Ridge.

Loads of poles for Lilco that will be forwarded via the Long Island RR. on John's layout are joined with other cars heading for Selkirk and (eventually) Terminal Yard.

Two APRR RBLs are heading home to Neal's layout with canned goods from Van Winkle Canning for ShopRite.

Three B&M RBLs scheduled to be returned empty to Merrimack, New Hampshire are added to the cuts for Selkirk.

The yard is now filled to capacity.  Yardmaster Cappy Foster makes the call to have the cut for the APRR set out on a siding along the mainline.  More cars are expected to arrive at West Mill to be forwarded the APRR so the cut will sit for a little while, but we need some room here!

The cut for the APRR  is on the right with the 2 bay cement hoppers following the river.

Watch the APPR cut get moved out of the yard in the video below:

The last train bringing cars to West Mill to be forwarded by the scheduled outbound trains of this series is KP&W BiWi-3 from Binghamton to Williams Yard.  Watch the train arrive with its F7A/ GP9 power.

The train is cut behind PC #160502 which will be heading to Neal's 3 Amigos Warehouse loaded with business machines from IBM.

The KP&W sets out cars on the track recently cleared at West Mill

The KP&W units uncouple from the cut for West Mill...

...and return to the BiWi for the rest of the trip to Williams Yard.

That concludes the gathering of cars for outbound trains!  Come back tomorrow and follow the dispatch of a train for Selkirk with cars for John's N.Y.C.T.L. and the pick up of cars for Weehawken with cars for Neal's APRR!

The West Mill Yard crew had their hands full and they handles all of that inbound freight. Cappy Foster needs to be commended on his skill to keep things moving. I see there’s an enormous amount of freight coming to the APRR and the crew will be ready!

    Great work Ralph!
