PCCM 99: Part 4 on the KPD

Welcome back virtual ops fans!

We are now in the "inbound" portion of our installments for this 99th Penn Central Car Movent series featuring car forwarding between John's New York Central Train Layout, Neal's Atlantic Pacific R.R., and my own Kings Port Division!

John dispatched PC train SK-7 hauling cars for the Kings Port Division from his Terminal Yard to Selkirk.  A trio of GP30s made up the assigned power for this run.

PC #2228 is on the point of SK-7 when it is seen arriving at Selkirk in the haze of an unusually warm early Spring day.

The three GP30s can be seen in the rippling heated air in the background.  Warm temperatures and diesel exhaust!

Watch the train roll into Selkirk in the video below:

The train's GP30 consist is removed and sent to servicing.   GP38 #7692 and FP7 #4362 are placed at the head end and the train is now designated as VWm-5 for West Mill (with a stop at Kings Port)

After leaving Selkirk the VWm-5 arrives at Kings Port some 50 minutes later.   Our railfan photographer chased the train down Route 9W but was a little late setting up his video camera at Kings Port. We just miss the consist as the train rolls into town.

After the train comes to a stop a crewman uncouples the cut of several cars that will be set out at the KP&W's Williams Yard.

Williams Yard awaits the cut for the KP&W.

Watch the GP38/ FP7 lashup shove the cut into Williams Yard.

After making the set out, the consist runs around the remaining cars to prepare to take them the rest of the way to West Mill.

Once the power returns the crew checks connections and pumps the air on a much shorter train.  VWm-5 departs Kings Port and arrives an hour later at West Mill.

Switcher #8951 gets to work sorting cars.  The Hoschton car is added to a string that will become a Bloomberg Turn.

The switcher then sets a pair of lime-filled PS-2 hoppers near the car float.  These cars will eventually be placed on the float for Port Owen Brick Co.

Three cars are readied for a Kings Port Turn.

While the switcher completes its work a horn on the south end of town heralds the arrival of today's WV-2 from Weehawken.  The first five cars on this train are a block for West Mill forwarded by the APRR from their Rock Ridge Yard.

The cars for West Mill are cut behind a KP&W boxcar carrying steel banding for Port Owen Brick from Shapeless Steel in Rock Ridge.

The train's GP40/ U33C consist pulls the West Mill cut away and sets it out on a siding next to the mainline.

After setting out the West Mill cut WV-2's power returns to its train and continues north to Selkirk.  The end of the train is seen crossing Railroad Ave. near the Canton Box Co.

Switcher #8951's next job is to bring in the cut of cars left by WV-2.

Watch the action in the video below:

We'll leave West Mill at this time and head over to Kings Port's Williams Yard tomorrow!

    Terminal Yard out...

Well done Ralph!!! I liked the SK-7s arrival at Selkirk on the hot and hazy day. Power swap was nicely done and VWm-5 was fun to follow as it dropped cars at Williams Yard and arrived in West Mill. The 8951 remains the best bang for the buck switch engine in the PCCMs as it continues to keep traffic flowing in and out of West Mill. I liked how the loud hors heralded the arrival of Train WV-2 from Weehawken. Let loose the pigeons!!! Nice work setting up your local trains. I look forward to part 5!!

    Rock Ridge Yard out!

The movement of freight from both Selkirk and Weehawken was handled very quickly so there’s no down time for the engines. The GP38/F7 combo moving freight is a nice consist. Making the freight move at Williams yard was nice to watch. Waiting for the next part of the inbound!

Nice start to your inbound Ralph!
