PCCM #85: Part 1 on the KPD

 Hello all!

We are starting our latest virtual ops series, Penn Central Car Movement #85.  Follow the action this weekend as John's New York Central Train Layout, Neal's Atlantic Pacific R.R., and my own Kings Port Division are in the process of assembling cars into outgoing trains to each others' layouts.

A number of the cars that will be forwarded on those outgoing trains are scheduled to arrive at West Mill Yard today.  The first group comes in on a Kings Port & Western transfer run from Mayfield Yard seen below holding at a red signal indication before accessing the main at West Mill.

Watch as the Mayfield Transfer waits for a short PC coal train, an echo of our recent coal ops series, and then pulls onto the main.

The Transfer pulls beyond the entrance to the yard by the Grape Nuts billboard.

Watch the train back into West Mill Yard and set out the cars after its caboose has been cut, and then pick up a string of cars to take back to Mayfield in the video below.

The transfer run prepares to leave West Mill with its RS3 in front.

On to Mayfield!

More KP&W action occurs at West Mill an hour later as the Binghamton to Williams Yard Transfer Run (the BiWi) arrives to drop of some cars.  The long train is often pool powered by  pairs of KP&W and B&O F7As.

Virtual ops cars being set out at West Mill include three Lehigh Valley cars.  LV NIRX 41000 is loaded with
paper stock for Berk Enterprises , LV 7120 is being forwarded from James Desiderio Produce to Jamaica Foods, and LV 8247  is loaded with batteries for Ford.
A fourth LV car, # 66392, will stay on the train to Williams Yard as it is being forwarded to Lake Port, NH via the KP&W's connection with the B&M there.
Watch the BiWi's power drop off the three white LV boxcars and then reconnect with the train for the rest of the trip to Williams Yard in the video below.

After the WiBi leaves, Switcher #8951 pulls the cars into West Mill Yard.

The next train to arrive with virtual ops cars is the Penn Central's Bloomberg Turn back from picking up cars in the Catskills.  Watch the Turn wait for a Power Balancing run from Selkirk to Weehawken before backing cars into West Mill Yard.

After dropping off its cars the Bloomberg Turn's power leaves the yard to return to the engine servicing tracks.

Watch the GP20s make their move while a GP7/GP9 consist leaves the engine tracks running light as a Northbound local heading out to pick up cars at the nearby Gulf Facility.

While the GP20s are tied down at West Mill, the Northbound Local's Geeps arrive at the Gulf Facility to pull two tank cars.

The cars are brought to West Mill, but before entering the yard the small local will also pick up a couple of covered hoppers from Empire Grain.

Watch the pick up at Empire Grain in the video below:

That's enough for today!  Stay tuned tomorrow as cars arriving at West Mill for both the NYCTL and the APRR are assembled into trains and dispatched!

I hope you enjoyed putting this post together as much as I enjoyed reading and watching it! You hooked me in with the F7-RS unit on the Mayfield Transfer with a shot of coal running from the previous op. I appreciated that. You outdid yourself with the KP&W BiWi though. Pooled KP&W - B&O power, a block of LV freight cars and a very substantial train really showcased the KP&W and it's interchange partners. The Bloomberg Turn with the GP20s, a power balancing move and the Northbound local with the high hood Geeps rounded out some very fine RR action. Great work Ralph!

Great start right out of the gate Ralph! I like the string of KP&W 40’ Box Cars on that one move, and the lone covered hopper. The video with the power move was very impressive, don’t think I’ve seen that type of move in a while. Your KP&W engines got a workout today on the Mayfield transfer and the BiWi runs!
