P.C.C.M. #84: Coal Op Part 2 on the KPD

 Hello!

We're running a special one weekend coal op involving John's New York Central Train Layout, Neal's Atlantic Pacific R.R., and my own Kings Port Division.   A long unit train of loaded coal hoppers from John's N.Y.C.T.L. arrived on the KPD yesterday and its cars have been sorted into various blocks for their respective consignees.  In some cases loads were exchanged for empties and West Mill is filling up with cars to be returned to the N.Y.C.T.L. for eventual forwarding to Hudson Coal.

Yesterday a block of loaded coal hoppers for Corning Glass's power plant was set out on a siding for the the Kings Port & Western's next run from Williams Yard to Binghamton (the WiBi).    The train is seen arriving today at West Mill with twin F7As on the point.  The KP&W blue on these units has faded over the years.

The F7As are cut from the train to pick up the hoppers for Corning Glass.

After coupling them to the train the WiBi proceeds to Binghamton.

Heading westbound to Binghamton!

After arriving at Binghamton the cars are added to a run to Corning and are later set out at the large industry.

Meanwhile, south of West Mill, the Cement Job that was seen leaving in yesterday's installment has finished dropping off a string of loaded hoppers at Tri Mount Cement and is returning to the yard with a cut of empties.

The Cement Job backs into West Mill Yard, cuts its caboose, and sets out the empties on track #3.

The Geeps at the head end pass by their transfer caboose as they shove the cars into the yard.

Several empty hoppers await their dispatch back to the N.Y.C.T.L.

Even more empties arrive an hour later as the WiBi's Eastbound counterpart from Binghamton to Williams Yard (the BiWi) arrives to drop off a small cut of hoppers.

The F7A&B consist pulls the cut of hoppers away from the rest of the train...

...and sets them out in West Mill Yard.

The yard is now full of empty hoppers ready to be assembled into a unit train for Terminal Yard on John's N.Y.C.T.L.

As usual, SW9 #8951 does the honors.

Watch the switcher work in the video below:

The long string of empty hoppers is about to become a train as #8951 provides a caboose....

...and the assigned power, a GP38-2/F7B consist, arrives to couple on.  The odd lashup is a classic Kings Port Division arrangement, using what is available.   The two units should have a sufficient power to tonnage ratio to pull these empty cars to Selkirk and eventually to Terminal Yard.

The locomotives couple up to the train.

Watch the train leave West Mill as Extra #8150 in the video below:

After Extra #8150 leaves West Mill Yard the car float casts off and the loaded hoppers onboard eventually find their way to the Edison Power Plant at Port Owen.

Extra 8150 later arrives at Kings Port.  The GP38-2/ F7B consist uncouples to pick up six empty hoppers from the KP Steel mill complex.  More hoppers for Hudson Coal!

The train's manifest is now complete  Watch the train depart Kings Port and pick up speed for the run to Selkirk, and eventually, Terminal Yard.

Thanks for following this virtual coal op!  Hope you enjoyed it as we moved dozens of hoppers around!

    Terminal Yard out!

Hall of Fame entry part two!!! Great wrap to the outbound portion on the KPD. KP&W F7As and F7A&B powering the WiBi and Biwi put us in railfan nirvana! The sea of hoppers at West Mill was quite impressive. Extra 8150 with help from the F7B looked great coming out of Kings Port with that long string of empty hoppers. Good job by the West Mill Power Desk to cobble together sufficient tractive effort to get this train to Selkirk and Terminal Yard. Well Done Ralph!!!

    1. Thanks John! I do like running those F units! The focus on coal operations that filled West Mill with hoppers was a lot of fun this weekend!

Great turnaround with all of those coal cars. The cars spotted at the Edison Power Plant at Port Owen looks really nice. I really like the way the entire industry came out as well as Tri mount Cement.

    Nice job Ralph!

  3. Thanks Neal! Both Tri Mount Cement and the Edison Power Plant are works in progress but I like having them as newer industries for our virtual ops.
